The
early 1980s was a particularly good period for independent films.
Notable from this period is Chan is Missing (1982), Repo
Man (1984), Buckaroo Banzai (1984) and Alan Rudolph's
Choose Me (1984).
If
you have not seen the latter, its a low-key, ensemble, actor-oriented
romantic comedy. It makes excellent use of the environment of Los
Angeles and its art scene.

The movie has no special effects, and nothing large explodes. Nevertheless, it is entertaining for many reasons not least of which is the performance by Genevieve Bujold. If you want to see what can be done without digital visual effects and a low budget and some talented friends, this is a good place to start.
